One of the absolute highlights of our trip was the trip to Eastern Egg Island with the Hardy Boat Cruises to look for Puffins. And what excitement when our group actually began to sight them. These are the most adorable little creatures.....small (only about 10 inches high and weighing no more than a can of Coke). They look a bit like bumble bees when in flight and when they attempt to land on water, they do so with a "splat". Our tour guide from the Audubon Society had helped reintroduce this tiny sea bird to Eastern Egg Island over 20 years ago. Students still keep vigil on the island to guard the Puffins from predators and to keep records of their progress. To date there are now 100 pairs of these "clowns of the sea"....much to the delight of those of us who had a glimpse of them and their world....
